BCS: more diverse workforce key to UK AI ethics global leadership

#artificialintelligence

The BCS has published a report advocating that the UK should take a global lead on the application of ethics to artificial intelligence (AI). It said that the UK "can lead the world in creating AI that cares about humanity – provided more people from non-tech backgrounds choose the field". It added that a more diverse range of people need to be in AI-related jobs if public trust in the technology is to grow, and that government and the IT industry need to join forces to make sure that happens. The policy discussion document Priorities for the national AI strategy is intended to complement the UK government's National AI Strategy, which is due to be released later this year, a BCS spokesperson said. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the government's Office for AI are aware of the contents of the BCS document.

Artificial intelligence does not represent a threat to jobs, Taoiseach says

#artificialintelligence

The Taoiseach said he is conscious that the concept of AI "hasn't had the best reputation" in popular culture, but said it could play a crucial role in economic recovery. Enterprise Ireland's Carol Gibbons joined Taoiseach @MichealMartinTD and Minister @RobertTroyTD for the launch of Ireland's first National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy. Find out more about the opportunities for Irish enterprise in AI technologies: https://t.co/YIDyuH6A2u He said AI had the capacity to double economic growth by 2035. "Inevitably, that popular culture suspicion has sometimes leaked into important discussions about the role it will actually play in our economy and in our society in the years and decades ahead," he said.

Artificial Intelligence is the Key to Economic Recovery - Forbes Israel

#artificialintelligence

The Covid-19 vaccine may end the Corona pandemic faster than we thought. However, we must not forget the economic crisis caused by certain countermeasures (like lockdowns, quarantines etc.) that were taken everywhere (almost) globally, including in Israel. We believe that in order to to accelerate the required economic recovery and to emerge from the crisis with a relative advantage in the post-Corona global race, we need to promote aggressively Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology. AI should stand at the center of Israel next technological revolution, in order to serve as the locomotive of fast economic growth. The global race for technological superiority in the information age has begun long before the Pandemic. However, the pandemic emphasized our dependence on fast computerized communications, and the increase in the demand for using the internet, social networks, Zoom etc., empowered with AI capabilities, is undoubtable.

Mass adoption of AI can aid Brazil's economic recovery, study says

#artificialintelligence

The Brazilian economy could benefit from a boost of up to 4.2% within the next decade if companies and governments promote large-scale adoption of artificial intelligence, according to a new study by consulting firm FrontierView commissioned by Microsoft. The potential of GDP increase of more than four percentage points is the most optimistic scenario set out in the reseach, whereby AI use goes beyond automation and is used to create highly skills jobs, drive productivity and economic growth. Even in the most conservative scenario, where the technology is minimally used and only for automation, Brazil could see a 1.8% GDP boost, according to the research. Both scenarios assume that Brazil will adopt all the AI features currently available until 2030. "Our research has found that artificial intelligence can be a driver of Brazil's economic recovery after the Covid-19 pandemic. With the right strategies and investments, the country can increase its economic growth and increase the productivity of the population", said research director for Latin America at FrontierView, Pablo Gonzalez Alonso.

Congress probes how AI will impact U.S. economic recovery

#artificialintelligence

AI has the potential to improve human lives and a company's bottom line, but it can also accelerate inequality and eliminate jobs during the worst U.S. recession since the Great Depression. This dual promise and peril led members of the House Budget Committee to hold a hearing today to discuss the impact of AI on economic recovery, the future of work, and the federal budget. Expert witnesses recommended approaches that ranged from giving people lifelong upskilling accounts to creating regional investment districts and portable benefits. Daron Acemoglu warned the committee about the dangers of excessive automation. The MIT professor and economist recently found that every robot replaces 3.3 human jobs in the U.S. In a working paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research, Acemoglu detailed how excessive automation looks for ways to replace workers with machines or algorithms but produces few new jobs.

Japan's creaking computer systems are hampering economic recovery, experts say

The Japan Times

The coronavirus crisis may have finally forced the government to get serious about fixing its computer systems. Before the pandemic, the problems might have been merely annoying, but now they're impeding an economic recovery. Japan's aging administrative pipeline has delayed aid money getting to where it's needed during the pandemic. To fix that, the government last month included a "digital new deal" in its annual policy goals, calling for a year of concentrated investment to boost data-sharing between ministries and update websites, although no price tag has been given yet. Economists say the shoddy state of the government's digital services has damped the benefits from fiscal stimulus and is hurting the country's broader competitiveness by holding back technological progress in the private sector.

After this COVID winter comes an AI spring

#artificialintelligence

During boom times, companies focus on growth. In tough times, they seek to improve efficiency. History shows us that after every major economic downturn since the 1980s, businesses relied on digital technology and, specifically, innovations in software technology to return to full productivity with fewer repetitive jobs and less bloat. The years I've spent as a VC have convinced me that this is the best time to start an AI-first enterprise, not despite the recession, but because of it. The next economic recovery will both be driven by artificial intelligence and accelerate its adoption.

Do We Need A Recruitment Agency For Robots?

#artificialintelligence

The number of industrial robots in operation around the world has grown rapidly in recent years, but nowhere more so than in China, where some 30% of the world's robots are in operation. This growth has prompted many to ponder whether humans are being pushed out of the workforce in favor of their robotic brethren. This isn't really born out by the evidence however. For instance, a study from a few years ago suggests that such fears of widespread job displacement may be somewhat overblown. The study saw over 300 occupations examined over a 33 year time-scale from 1980 to try and examine the impact of automation.
